Deborah Lippmann and Holt Renfrew: Raise Your Glass!
So I work about two blocks away from a Holt Renfrew. When preparations for The Big Day were underway, this became a pretty regular destination during lunch hours, and I got pretty friendly with the ladies in the shoe and cosmetics departments. I still visit regularly, if only to chat about nail polishes. When I heard that Deborah Lippmann was making an exclusive polish for Holt’s 175th anniversary this month, I’ll admit that I was a little excited. Deborah Lippman is the brand that got me hooked on polish in the first place, and polish is probably one of the few things in that store that won’t give my debit card whiplash.
The polish is in Holt’s signature magenta (a colour that I’ve noticed brings a smile to many women’s faces, lol). Accurately capturing the colour of this polish is no small task for someone with my limited photography skills. That being said, I don’t think the polish is an exact match for the Holt’s pantone shade of magenta anyway. The base is darker and (I think) more warm-toned; however, the glitter in it is much lighter and brighter, and the combination of the two give the right impression of the signature colour. The formula of this polish… well, it was a nightmare. Probably the thickest, non-leveling goop I’ve ever worked with. This could easily be solved with a little polish thinner though and I’m willing to give it the benefit of the doubt that maybe I got a dud bottle. I will definitely thin it significantly before wearing it again. It is also a very thirsty glitter, so I’ve used a coat of Gelous and of Seche Vite to tame the grit. My initial impression was that this polish wasn’t worth the effort; however, once I saw it out in the sun, it won me over with its pretty sparkle. I’m like a raccoon that way. I like sparkly things.
